Five hundred years ago, the Maison Realm was shattered, divided into warring kingdoms of elemental Wielders with fate and truth shadowed and uncertain. Now, factions of both the light and dark venture into the human realm in search of the prophesied Spirit Priestess who is said to Wield the Elements of Five to bring the two fractured kingdoms together. Lyric has no idea that there's a realm outside the human one she lives in. When fate and circumstances are pulled from her hands after an accident, she finds out that nothing is as it seems. War is raging around her, and when Lyric realizes that they are searching for her, she must rely on those she once trusted as she trains: a boy who isn't who she thought, and a new realm of warriors who have come to protect her. For the darkness is coming, and the Queen of Obscurité wants to ensure that the King of Lumière can't get his hands on Lyric. And the only way to ensure that is if Lyric herself is no more...no matter the cost to prophecy.

I fell in love with most of these characters within the first few pages. Lyric is so many of us both in our youth and out of it. The feeling of not knowing who you are or what you want, but knowing there is something out there for you, that you were meant for more...I loved how it makes her. I loved how she rarely second guessed the people around her but almost always did with herself. Lyric stays true to character through out the story, yes she grows and changes, becomes more ,but she is still the uncertain Lyric we meet on page one. Braelynn is a favorite of mine. She is a gentle soul with an inquisitive nature and an adventurers heart: I think I liked her so well because she reminds my of myself, but better. Emory....I have feelings, they aren’t the best feelings to have. I don’t know if she’s gonna turn herself around but yeah, I don’t like her, haha! Rhodes...total swoon worthy BBF....maybe. No, I love him, he was so gentle and yet an absolute warrior...but honestly he was almost as unsure of himself as Lyric and he certainly didn’t give himself enough credit, but maybe that’s part of his charm. My problem, I started to second guess his motives and with the way the book ended I still love him but am just afraid he isn’t the guy I thought he was going to be. There are some other characters that I won’t talk about because I don’t want to give anything away, but I am REALLY curious about them, especially a particular someone you will meet toward the end. I loved the world building and wish more than ever that I had an artistic bone in my body to draw the world that Carrie is giving us! Also, a map would be AH-MAZING, there’s almost nothing better than a fantasy book with a map, ha! The beginning starts slow but y’all once the action starts, hold on because it comes fast, Carrie puts these characters through the ringer physically and emotionally and for the reader, it’s a magical ‘ride’! I had totally Alice in Wonderland vibes while reading and if you are a fan of fantasy from SJM or Cora Carmack get From Breath and Ruin on your list!

However, I don’t think this one hit the mark. There are portions of “day to day life” that are a bit boring, followed by HUGE expositional dumps of information, followed by over-explained nuances. I feel like this book would be more appropriate for a Middle Grade audience based on the writing style, but the content makes it YA....a tough fence to straddle.

Not a very unique YA fantasy. very tropey. But if that's what your looking for, it did it well. The writing was more than decent. And the characters were intriguing. The romance was heavy and a little much for me personally. But I'm sure teenagers will love it. Interested to see how the author's writing style and voice changes in the future.

WOW what an amazing start to what promises to be another fabulous series. I immersed myself totally into this book. From the outset I was gripped and engaged with Lyric, Braelynn and Emory and the dynamics of their friendships and the paths that they were going to take. But then all hell breaks loose and I found myself right there next to them as they went on their adventure and I was standing with them as they fought their fight. I cried, I cheered and I shouted at the ereader more than once. I f WOW what an amazing start to what promises to be another fabulous series. I immersed myself totally into this book. And the only way to ensure that is if Lyric herself is no more…no matter the cost to prophecy. Read it here

I was a little disappointed with ending with Lyric but absolutely gutted over her bff Braelynn but hopefully that becomes very interesting in next book. Differently a winner but get the feeling next books in series are better.

HOLY MOLY!!! Carrie Ann Ryan you have done it once again, another FANTABULOUS book. I am a HUGE fan of your work but you have blown my mind with this story. I know you are new and worried about writing a YA book but you have done an ABSOLUTE FANTASTIC job. I really don’t know what to say that can honestly do justice with how wonderfully you have done with this book. I really don’t know what to say that can honestly do justice with how wonderfully you have done with this book. Lyric thought she was a typical 18 year old stressing about what she would be majoring in college, she never would have thought that her nightmares would become apart of her life. Since an little girl Lyric has always had nightmares of shadowy figures, getting to the point that during the day she is also seeing shadows in the corner of her eyes. Rhodes is the Prince to the Lumière Kingdom and a wielded of Air and water, he and his sister Rosamond who is a Seer have been sent to earth to search amongst the humans to find the Spirit Priestess. The Spirit Priestess is someone that can wield all 5 elements; Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Spirit, she is also the person that will be able to bring the two kingdoms; Lumière (Light) and Obscurité (Dark) back together and end the 500 year old war. After an accident when out hiking with Rhodes, Rosamond and Braelynn, Lyric starts to have all these questions that she believes that only Rhodes and Rosamond can answer. So after discussing her concerns about the accident with her best friend Braelynn they both decide to go and ask the siblings, but before they get a chance to ask anything they are attacked by the ‘shadows’ and life as Lyric knew is never going to be the same. Rhodes, Lyric and Braelynn make a plan to go to Maison to get back Rosamond after she was kidnapped by the Neg (shadows). I was seriously hooked from the beginning of this book all the way to the end, but I was disappointed that it finished. I was sucked in and hooked on every word that I read, I never wanted it to end. Yes I know that there is going to be a sequel as this is just the beginning of Lyric’s story but I wasn’t ready for the book to end. I can’t wait for book 2 to release. Thank you Carrie for what you do and please never stop putting your words down on paper, as the worlds you create are so much better than going on a holiday.

I was excited to read From Breath and Ruin because of the premise but it didn't work for me for a few reasons. I struggled with getting into the story and being invested in the characters. I felt like they went over the same things especially at the beginning and I couldn't get a read on Lyric's personality. That said there were things that intrigued me so much so that I am interested to see where the author is going with it. I'm trumping this up to first book in a series syndrome and hoping tha I was excited to read From Breath and Ruin because of the premise but it didn't work for me for a few reasons. I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest! It was a great book ! I have to be honest and say that I was a little confuse at the beginning of the book. As I read the book, then I understood what the book was about. It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book! I can't wait for the next book in this series.

What would you do if someone told you that not only was there another plane of existence, you and all the other people that were from that plane were magic, but you were also the salvation for that other world? I received a free copy of this title to read and review for Wicked Reads 3 Stars. Carrie Ann Ryan is a new-to-me author. Lyric is an adult, the genre is young adult, but I feel younger teens would enjoy this book the most. Coming-of-age, Lyric doesn't know what she wants to do with the rest of her life, finding the pressure of making a life-changing decisions suffocating. How at eighteen, with no experiences, is Lyric to know what major in college she should choose? She's never excelled in anything, but been good at academics, so it's not as if she can play into her strengths. I felt this would be a comfort to younger readers, as well as resonating with older readers, as most of us have been in such a state of terrifying indecision. I did struggle at the start of the novel (the first 20% or so), as it was laden with inner monologues about the state of her life, her controlling ex now being her friend, and the dreams. Her indecision resonated with me, the fear of her dreams evoked real emotions within me, but Lyric also came off as a Suzy do-gooder, who never made mistakes, did as she was told, and that comes off as both judgmental in its goodness by comparison, as it does boring. Mousy generally doesn't lend well to a strong heroine. I couldn't wrap my mind around Lyric calling Rhodes 'dreamy', since that's phrasing someone over 70 used in their youth. I also never had Lyric firm in my mind. At one point, I thought Lyric was described as being shorter and overly curvy, which I took to mean a bit chubby. I was thrilled by this and being bisexual, as both aren't often used to describe teenage girls in the young adult genre. She describers herself as not being athletic, yet she runs continuously as a hobby. A large portion of the beginning quarter of the novel focused on Lyric jogging. While I knew what color and type of sports bra she had beneath her tanks tops and windbreaker, I never got an accurate image of the heroine affixed in my head, as what I thought she would look like contradicted other descriptions. Lyric has dreams, nightmares really, that show her insight into her life that has been kept from her. As usual in the young adult, fantasy genre, Lyric doesn't know she has powers, thinking herself below average, not knowing how she fits into the world, but then finds out she is rather extraordinary instead. The boy (even though Rhodes is over 21) is the one with the information Lyric needs. Where I had issue with the magic system and world-building... it was glossed over, same as with Lyric's appearance, the characters' personalities jumping all over the place, and their motivations were muddy, yet I can remember what foods were in the burritos, washing of the sheets on a daily basis, the color and material of the sports bras, the number of tank tops beneath the highly detailed mesh windbreaker, the color of the leggings, and the type of shoes. What I needed explained never was to my satisfaction. From a young adult's standpoint, no doubt they will be intrigued and find enjoyment in this novel and the series. I do believe the plot, the way the characters interacted with one another, this is far younger than the 18-20+ age-range of the characters, more like 12-14 in their behavior and dialogue. I did struggle with this, as it didn't read as adults in the novel- I wish their ages had been nudged to be younger. Writing this review from my adult standpoint, I must admit I didn't enjoy this as much as I hoped I would. In a nutshell, everything felt forced. The flow, the direction the plot took, the connections the characters had with one another, all of it felt forced. While I do recommend this novel to young adults, I'm not sure how it will be received by adults. I won't be continuing on with the series.

My first thoughts after finishing From Breath and Ruin: decent, curious, and I definetly want more. But, then the shadows from Lyric’s nightmares become real and she finds herself in another realm fighting in a war that has been going on for centuries. Oh, and she also has magic powers in this other realm. I thought From to Breath was a pretty good start to series about a young woman finding out she is a chosen one. I will admit that for me the story does start out a little slow. I thought there might have a little too many chapters about Lyric and her internal battle with her college major. But, once the story does get going it was definitely full of action. I liked that Lyric is bisexual and that her parents don’t even bat an eyelash at her. But, like her dad, I am not sure I could be friends with my ex girlfriend. Lyric made the decision to date one her best friends and keep her in life. Lyric has two best friend sidekicks in this story: her ex girlfriend and her friend since Kindergarten. So, of course, when Lyric goes into another realm her best friends go with her. I do agree with some other reviews I have seen that her friends are a little two dimensional because this story is about Lyric and what these characters can do to help her grow. All in all, From Breath and Ruin is definitely a cheesy chosen one story. But, I am curious to to find out where the story is going. I am curious to find out how the characters keep developing especially with Lyric's best friends because I have feeling there is more to their story too. I will admit there was a lot of set up in this first book but I did like the world and direction the story was headed. So, I know I will be picking up the next book in this series.
